Nobility

In the past, a large number of noble families lived in Solkan, mainly because of the nearby Gorizia. Some were undoubtedly of Slovenian descent. Some
noblemen lived in Solkan, and many only had property here, e. g. an annual residence, but they lived in Gorizia. Five noble families possessed family tombs in the parish church of St. Stephen. The Solkan nobility belonged to the lower forms of nobility, there were several count families and one family of marquis. The count families were Coronini, Strassoldo and Lanthieri.

In addition to the tombs and tombstones, the villas and estates and their interesting façades are worth a visit. The Solkan nobility, which left its mark on the place, includes 19 noble families:

  • the Mulitsch Palmerberg nobles
  • the Counts Manin (Villa Manin)
  • the Nordis nobles (1393)
  • the Marquises Obizzi
  • the Counts Puppi (14th century)
  • the Barons Rechbach
  • the Riccabona – Reichenpels nobles
  • the Sočebran nobles – Andrej Komel
  • the Stabile nobles (19th century from Villa Vicentine) – where the TD Solkan Tourist Association is located.
